FAQs

HealthCred Care helps justice-involved individuals enroll in ACA-compliant health insurance plans at no cost—starting while incarcerated and completing upon release.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a federal law that provides health insurance with comprehensive benefits—often with $0 monthly premiums for individuals with low income.

A QLE is a significant life change that allows you to apply for health coverage outside of the normal Open Enrollment window. Being released from jail is a QLE.

A SEP is a 60-day window triggered by a QLE that lets you apply for insurance. Being released from incarceration qualifies you for this window.

You have 60 days from the date of your release to enroll in a plan. HealthCred Care helps you act fast to secure coverage immediately.

No. Federal law does not allow enrollment in ACA plans during active incarceration. However, HealthCred Care can start the process and submit it the moment you’re released.

No. ACA eligibility is based on income, not employment status. If you’re unemployed or low-income, you likely qualify for $0 plans.

We check for active ACA coverage at intake. If you already have an existing plan, we retrieve and provide that information to you and the facility so it can be used immediately.

ACA plans include: Doctor visits, Emergency care, Hospitalizations, Surgery, Mental health treatment, Substance use services, Prescriptions, Labs, X-rays, and more.

Most HealthCred Care applications are approved within 24 hours, with coverage starting immediately.

No. If you qualify, your plan is fully subsidized. HealthCred is paid by the insurance carrier, not by you.

If more than 60 days have passed since your release, you may not qualify for SEP anymore. We’ll work with you to explore your options.

Yes. You can pick doctors and providers within your plan’s network.

No. Getting health insurance does not impact probation or parole and may help demonstrate responsible reentry behavior.

Yes. ACA plans include prescription drug coverage. You’ll be able to access needed medications right away.

While helpful, they are not always required. HealthCred staff will guide you based on what documentation you have.

Yes. Spouses and dependents may qualify, especially if you file taxes together or live in the same household.

Yes. All ACA plans must include behavioral health and substance use disorder coverage, including MAT services.
